Join us, Summer '23!

Join us for our next project on August 30th, September 6th, and September 7th in Detroit!

Two rehearsal and one show (see dates below)

Both meetings will have snacks.

A wonderful way to connect to your community and local farms. A healing and delicious experience for all!

We're especially excited to be partnering with New Music Detroit on this event, check out their page here:

From Justine Sedky, past orchestra member:

"One musician who signed on for the orchestra's journey almost immediately was [Justine ]Sedky...

Her first experience involved playing in a house with around 40 musicians. In the middle of rehearsing and recording, the group took a break to share a giant pot of lentil soup.

" … It was very community-building for me, personally. And musically, there's nothing that connects you to people you don't know quicker than being instructed to do these improvised, written, creative musical explorations together."

Frequent Questions

I only play music for fun, and don’t have a formal background. Can I still join?

Absolutely. We have parts for every skill level, even if you just know a few chords on guitar or played an instrument in high school. This groups is about community, not precision, so everyone is welcome!

What if the music is too hard for me?

Tell us about your music background as you sign up, and we’ll ensure that you get a part specifically tailored to your experience level! The music at our shows is usually pretty easy, and we’re making extra sure that this show’s music is especially accessible.

I’m not any kind of musician, but I want to be involved! Is there a role for me?

Yes! The music we play has performance parts for non-musicians. The piece involves many mindful sound-making parts that can be done by anyone, as well as sing-along opportunities for hobbyist singings.

I don’t read sheet music, can I still join?

Yup! There will be plenty of chances to learn the music by ear, we’ll even teach you the part in a one-on-one setting if you want.

Will I get paid for playing with the orchestra?

Nope, this project will feature an all-volunteer orchestra. All of our staff and organizers are volunteers as well. There’s a time and a place for professionalized music transactions, but this project is specifically about building community and playing music for fun.

I have a dietary restriction, will I be accommodated at the free dinners?

All our meals are vegetarian, and we’re able to accommodate almost all food restrictions, including gluten intolerance, nut allergies, and veganism. There will be an opportunity to share specifics when you sign up.

Will this project have dinner provided?

Unlike previous projects, we won't be serving dinner at this event. We will have a snacks table set up at the two rehearsals, though, and there will be time to mingle and eat built into the rehearsal.

I don’t have a car, will there be transportation to and from the rehearsals?

We’ll be happy to set up a carpool for you if you need one!

Can teens join?

Absolutely.  Please note that anyone under the age of 14 will need to be accompanied by a chaperone.
